Workers At Risk For Mesothelioma

Although anyone can be exposed to high levels of asbestos, there are many workers who are at a particularly high risk for developing this cancer. These occupations have been identified by their alarmingly high rates of mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis and include shipyard workers, teachers, boilermakers and drywallers, just to name a few.

Several Industries Are Higher-Risk
The evidence regarding the workers at risk for mesothelioma is extensive. For example, residents of the Hampton Roads area in Virginia, a major shipbuilding center, have a rate of mesothelioma that is seven times the national average. Industries such as shipbuilding, construction, and mining that involve high levels of asbestos exposure also have many workers at significant risk for developing mesothelioma.

Other workers at risk for mesothelioma are Navy veterans, many of whom worked closely with asbestos as part of their military service. Drywall installers, asbestos insulation workers, electricians, and even schoolteachers (who may spend years in classrooms with asbestos-containing ceiling and/or floor tiles) have also been found to have unusually high rates of mesothelioma.
